We announced in our newsletter that:
Iyengar Yoga Detroit Collective advocates for a permanent ceasefire in Palestine, and the dissolution of apartheid and occupation in the region.

We felt clear that our statement aligned with our collective’s mission, featured on our home page:

We embrace Iyengar Yoga as a practice for healing and collective liberation, by providing high quality, affordable classes that welcome all bodies.

We promote self-awareness to create a more just, discerning, and compassionate society.

We practice cooperative economics to align our values with the ethics of yoga.

Those who have practiced yoga primarily or exclusively as āsana and prānāyāma may feel confused about why we have chosen to speak out on a topic that may ostensibly appear unrelated to yoga. Luckily, as Iyengar Yoga practitioners, we have always been students of yoga philosophy and embrace aṣtanga yoga (the eight limbs), or as BKS Iyengar preferred, aṣtadala, the eight petals. We strive to apply these timeless teachings to every aspect of our daily lives, and to understand them more deeply through praxis.

IYDC, since inception, has been a socially and politically engaged community. We apply the framing of microcosm/macrocosm, and believe that our actions on the yoga mat extrapolate outward to our actions off the mat. We are also, unusual in some Iyengar Yoga circles, a younger community, with the majority of our students AND teachers in their 20s and 30s, although our founders are in their 50s and 60s. We have always been a vibrant, dynamic, culturally relevant community.

We are also geographically located in Hamtramck, Michigan, a heavily Arab and South Asian community, rich with Yemenis and Bangladeshi. We are blessed with civic organizations, families, people in leadership, mosques, temples, groceries, restaurants, and more, reflecting our incredibly diverse community. We are not far from Dearborn, MI, home to the largest Arab population in the USA.

[UPDATE: We are located in the heart of the Yemeni community, and we are in shock and horror at the bombing of Yemen by the USA/UK instigated on 11 January. We call for an immediate ceasefire on the beleaguered families of our neighbors!]

Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib is a friend and representative for many people in IYDC’s immediate and extended community. Many of us have Palestinian friends, neighbors, coworkers, and colleagues. These connections to the Palestinian and larger Arab diaspora make this particular conflict even more relevant to our studio community. Additionally, Hamtramck is a town in the midst of Detroit, a metropolis with one of the largest Black populations in the USA and an illustrious, globally impacting cultural and political landscape.

Hamtramck is also home to many young artists, entrepreneurs, digital nomads, and more. The Metro Detroit area is home to a thriving Jewish community and
many of our Jewish students, along with students of all faiths and
backgrounds, are calling for a permanent ceasefire.

We at IYDC recognize that the crisis in Gaza and the occupied West Bank are but current iterations of a longstanding occupation. Some of us have intensified our research and study of Israel/Palestine in order to comprehend the situation more fully. Professor and historian Rashid Khalidi describes how the early Zionist statements were explicit in their settler colonial mission, freely using the language of occupation and colonialism. However, as he describes, after WWII, the practice of settler colonialism was no longer condoned by the international community, at which point the Zionist project began using the language of “self-determination” to define and justify itself. Because Europeans had committed the unspeakable brutality of the Jewish holocaust, many felt a burning urgency to unconditioanally support the creation of the State of Israel to absolve themselves of their shameful actions and inactions.

But as every significant historian and scholar, from Khalidi to Israeli Ilan Pappé to Edward Said, point out, the Zionist project required the dislocation of the current residents of the region. Millions in the Palestinian diaspora have lost their ancestral lands because Israel has deprived them of the right of return, just as the First Nations/Native Americans were stripped of their land, cultural, and spiritual practices, and endured forced family separation and assimilation. Here on Turtle Island, indigenous people were and continue to be killed through disease, military and civilian violence, and policies of displacement, forced marches, and relocation.

Yehudi Menuhin, a renowned humanitarian as well as stellar artist, recognized the injustice of settler colonialism. His father, Moshe Menuhin, spoke out against Zionism from the outset. Moshe was raised in a Zionist settlement in Palestine before the establishment of the state of Israel. However he chose to live in New York as an adult, when he realized the dream of Israel required a nightmare for the Palestinians. Moshe Menuhin “left Israel because he saw the Zionists were worshipping not God but their own power.” Other anti-Zionist Jews of his era include Martin Buber, Hannah Arendt, and Albert Einstein.

Yehudi Menuhin received backlash for his outspoken humanitarian stance. Is it coincidence that one of the first non-Indian students of Iyengar Yoga was an anti-Zionist Jew? Clearly both Moshe and Yehudi Menuhin were nonconformists, able to depart from dominant narratives, and recognize deeper truths about power, violence, spirituality, and identity. Perhaps this same search for truth helped lead Yehudi to BKS Iyengar.

Since the 1950s, the occupation has drastically expanded, Zionism has become more deeply entrenched, millions more have been displaced, and more lives lost. The resistance to the occupation has also expanded. As nonviolent resistance attempts were met with violent suppression, the resistance erupted in violence more frequently. IYDC does not condone violence, in keeping with the foundational tenet of yoga, ahimsa. However we also view ahimsa, not only as nonviolence of thought, word, and deed, but also as disruption of violence when it arises. We understand settler colonialism as inherently violent, wherever and whenever it occurs. Without condoning violent resistance, we also recognize that suppressing nonviolent resistance creates conditions for armed resistance to increase.

IYDC occupies unceded land of the Three Fires Confederacy of the Ojibwe, Odawa, and Potawatomi nations. Over the millenia, this land has been home to many nations. Many of us have been occupiers of this land for generations. Some of our ancestors were brought here as captives through the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Some of our ancestors came here as a result of the Cold War and the labor demands of global capitalism. As settlers, Turtle Island has become our homeland, and most of us do not have access to any other home. However, we can devote ourselves to solidarity with those who are of the land, support land-back movements, and challenge and dismantle oppression in all forms. We embrace Lilla Watson/Australian Aboriginal Movement’s understanding that “If you have come here to help me you are wasting your time, but if you have come because your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us work together.”

Since October, IYDC has offered opportunities to respond to the current atrocities in Israel/Palestine, through Grief Circles, participating in the General Strike for Palestine, hosting letter writing workshops, Teacher Education discussion groups, and āsana and prānāyāma workshops (Inner Warrior, Resting for Solidarity, Learning/Unlearning). We invite the global Iyengar Yoga community to incorporate yoga philosophy more fully to apprehend this crisis as responsible practitioners and citizens of the world.

Can we recognize the kleśas that require dismantling in order to keep learning and evolving? We are all guilty of avidya. This is natural and inevitable because there is always so much to learn. We all, even the sages, as they say, get trapped by abhiniveśa, fear of death, which may prevent right action. Yama and niyama also become frameworks to guide right action, as well as the teachings of Bhagavad Gita.

No doubt, all our primary texts have been used to justify every political position. IYDC strives to understand our scriptures as a framework for personal transformation to build collective liberation. In this instance, we translate collective liberation as an end of apartheid and occupation.

We recognize how difficult it is to depart from what our parents and grandparents, or the dominant culture, have taught us. We recognize the ways trauma informs our experience of the world and how we respond to it. We understand yoga as an embodied practice of sovereignty and ethics, such that instead of falling victim to our circumstances, we strive to create lives that embody our highest values, and integrate our ethics with our actions. We hope that as a global Iyengar Yoga community, we can be in solidarity, to heal ourselves, and cultivate well-being for all.

hong gwi-seokhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04634063684075535944noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6828556340051847986.post-58746938750622951232020-06-10T18:20:00.010-07:002020-06-10T18:37:22.368-07:00Ahimsa in Action: A Calling In for White Folks

We grieve for the families of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and countless other Black folks who have been abused by or lost their lives at the hands of the system of white supremacy and the movement of white nationalism. As white Iyengar yoga practitioners, we want to urge other white folks engaged in the art, science and philosophy of Iyengar yoga that doing nothing is unacceptable. We must take action for racial justice, now. Not doing so is equivalent to supporting the powers that be and the status quo. It’s time to read, to study, and to stay informed.

<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Ahimsa in Action is a group for white-identified folks to meet and find common language around racial justice work so that we hold more of the work around educating and talking to other white folks. We began by reading Robin DiAngelo’s <span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; font-style: italic; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">White Fragility <span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">together in March 2020. Here are some of our reflections from participants on why engaging in this work in the yoga studio setting works for us:

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">"Yoga is a practice that helps us to be more resilient, to recognize what is center for ourselves, and to work through difficulties in our lives. As white bodied people living in America, and especially in a majority Black city, we have an obligation to use those same skills to work on the injustice of the world. <span style="color: #222222; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; font-style: italic; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">White Fragility<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"> fits into that yoga practice because it asks us to first look inward at our own patterns of hurtful behaviour and the illusions and prejudices that lead to that behavior. It is only after we've examined our own behavior that we can then make ourselves useful in the struggle against racism. The book also provides a very helpful shared vocabulary for our chapter of Ahimsa in Action to continue the conversation about our own behavior and what we see out in the world."

Like yoga, it does not happen automatically, but instead demands discipline, focus and regular attention. Like yoga, it requires a letting go of the ego I have been socialized to cultivate. Like yoga, it is never finished: progress can feel glacial and the next steps can feel terrifying. And so the practice of yoga supports the practice of anti-racism, but the practice of anti-racism must also support the practice of yoga, both individually and for the community. Let's show up for both practices.”

Abhijata Sridhar is BKS Iyengar's granddaughter, who has become an international representative of Iyengar Yoga worldwide, especially since Guruji and Geetaji's passing. We love and appreciate the skillfullness, openmindedness, creativity, insight, and rigor she brings to her classes. In our time of worldwide sheltering at home, she has provided an audio recording and a PDF of a class taught February 12, 2020 that we urge you to try. <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We have entered week 4 of our closure. How are you holding up? Here is a sequence to banish the feeling of staleness that can come from a physical confinement. Until we can throw our windows open and move about freely, we can create inner refreshment, and rid ourselves of toxins we may be accumulating in our bodies and minds.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">It features a variety of twists done in many unconventional ways. At the convention, Abhi commented that there were many photos left out of LIGHT ON YOGA, including many of these twist variations. Try them all out, break out of known and habitual patterns, and have fun. Let us know what you observe from this sequence, and how you feel. Drink lots of water afterwards to help flush yourself out. Enjoy!
Our Sunday morning Led Practice is a time for seasoned practitioners to gather together to hang out and do a sequence together, collaboratively. A different person brings a sequence each week. Last Sunday, Erin brought a sequence based on one learned in Pune, December 2017, with Gulnaz Dashti, focusing on deep groin forward folds and arm balances. Here it is for you to try out!
Beloved IYDC Community,

We are needing to cancel all classes from today until 16 June 2019. After 23 days of rain in May, we are facing a mold issue in the walls of the studio. When we signed the lease in December, we had no idea how the building would fare through a very wet spring, and had no indications there would be problems.

We are asking the landlord to do comprehensive mold remediation in the building. To do this we have to move all the props, dismantle the rope wall, and dismantle the cork floor. We feel we must do this for the safety and health of our students and teachers.

We are lining up temporary spaces to hold a scaled-down class schedule this summer. Do you have leads on an affordable space with ample floor room? Also, do you have some hours to volunteer to help us? Please contact infoatiydc@gmail.com if you can help in any way.

Lucky for us, Iyengar Yoga is totally adaptable to all circumstances. Even with minimal props, we can benefit from a comprehensive practice. Meanwhile, you could use this time to more fully explore other practices of yoga (pranayama, philosophy, etc), as well as develop your home practice.

Here are some home practice links you could try out:
https://iyengaryogadetroit.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=c34fe790af4906ff155f5d85d&id=d08060f39a&e=04a3b41113

https://iyengaryogadetroit.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=c34fe790af4906ff155f5d85d&id=783becf3d0&e=04a3b41113

https://iyengaryogadetroit.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=c34fe790af4906ff155f5d85d&id=34744cc781&e=04a3b41113

Namaste,
IYDC Ananda Owners Circle
(Gwi-Seok, Erin, Valeriya, Amber)

This December I am spending a month in deep study at the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute (RIMYI) in Pune, India with two fellow teachers from Detroit, Michigan. While planning my trip to Pune, I knew it would open me up in ways I could not yet understand. I knew it would nourish me, physically, mentally, and spiritually. I have been craving this trip. Space to focus on my (r)evolution, to expand my sattvic state, to move closer and closer towards an understanding of my ātman(soul) while away from the distractions of daily life.

Travel here was long and enduring and tested my capacity for stillness and patience. In my day-to-day life I rarely sit still, in fact I’m known for my constant movement and need for tasks. There’s nothing like being trapped on an airplane for 7+ hours to challenge my old habits. Little did I know, even the trip here would feed my initial reflections spurred on in my first asana classes.

I arrived to my home for the month with my two travel companions after more than 3 days of travel and airport waiting. It was dawn, but the streets were crowded with traffic and pedestrians and the air filled with tropical birdcalls. Dawn provides a dreamy transition while travelling into a new time zone, a new place, and a new reality. After resting for a few hours we made our way to the Institute to register for classes and attend our first Prānāyāma (breath work) class. Much of that class was a blur in my jet-lagged state, but I left feeling filled with gratitude for being in a practice hall that I’ve seen pictures of and heard stories about for years. BKS Iyengar’s presence seemed to radiate from the walls lined with his photos.

The following day, I became reacquainted with Abhijata Sridhar, BKS Iyengar’s granddaughter, as she led us through an engaging class focused on exploring the unknown. She reflected to us that as we age we lose our ability to imagine, we place limits around what we are comfortable with. This is not the path towards transformation. She pushed us past these comfort zone barriers as we brought our hand under our feet in Parivrtta Trikonāsana (revolved triangle) and rocked back and forth with split legs in Śīrṣāsana (head balance). “What are you afraid of?” she asked in response to our hesitancy. “When I ask the children to reach their finger tips to the sky in Urdhva Hastāsana (upward reaching arms), they jump in their attempts to reach it.” We confronted old habits of complacency that we mask with caution as we explored the unknown and the fear that surrounds it through our asana.

Abhijataji shared a story of Guruji from when he was visiting China. He presented the audience with an empty water glass and a full water glass. One glass he shared was ready to be filled, while the other if filled any further would overflow. Her request to us, if we come to class clinging to our old habits, what we think we know, there is no room for new wisdom. Be the empty glass, ready and receptive to any incoming knowledge. Prashant Iyengar, son of BKS Iyengar, carried a similar theme throughout the course of his 7am class. Prashantji’s class was unlike any yoga class I have encountered, a mixture of musings, lecture, long asana holds, and space for deep inquiry. He encouraged us to contemplate the niyama (self-discipline) of śaucha (cleanliness) in regards to our consciousness. With humor he compared how śaucha in our physical bodies includes defecation, elimination as healthy process. But, with our minds, he commented, we are constipated. We take in more and more information, but rarely do we intentionally “defecate” or eliminate information from the mind. How, he asked, can we make elimination a sacred act? This is essential before working our way towards meditation (dhyāna), our 7th limb from Patañjali’s sutras. He chastised us, saying that for years, Guruji taught us what we wanted to know, not what we needed. Students visited and questioned him about mastering asana and how to structure national associations, when they could have been asking him about yoga. Instead we clung to these distractions. What do you need to eliminate to stay on the path of yoga and how can you do it through asana? he asked.

So, a week in and I am filled with questions. What is my unknown? Where do I fall into patterns that limit me or prevent my growth? What do I need to eliminate in order to move closer to transformation? I explore these questions in daily conversations with fellow students, in my personal asana and pranayama practice and study. I am so grateful to be here. I feel full of gratitude and awe at the teachings I take in each day and look forward to the days to come.

way by hook or crook to get here every 2 years like clockwork. I keep my living
expenses ridiculously low so that my extremely modest teaching income goes
right back into Iyengar Yoga study and travel. Walking through the gates of
RIMYI (Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute), I am reminded of all the
transformative moments I have experienced here: Guruji’s grand entry into the
practice hall every morning, often at the elbow of his granddaughter, Abhijata,
and later, with his great granddaughter in his arms; practicing in the same
room as Guruji, while keeping one eye on him; so many teaching gems, each worth
a lifetime of contemplation; and quiet afternoons in the library with Guruji at
his desk.

deeply humbling moments as well, where I felt shaken to the core, coming to
fully face my own ignorance and lack of understanding. But the practice of
Iyengar Yoga teaches us that THAT is where the transformative power lies. “What
I know is not important,” Guruji reminds us, “It is what I don’t know that is
important,” while encouraging us to “Go from the known to the unknown, the
finite to the infinite.”

the Institute to crack myself open, again and again. Oh, those hamstrings,

A great pose to strengthen your abdominal muscles. Not appropriate for menstruation or pregnancy. Put a blanket under your elbows if your arms don't touch the floor. You could also put your hands under your buttocks to make the pose a bit easier and to relieve any strain in your back.

If you’re accustomed to dropping in to whatever class may
fit your schedule on any given day, you may be surprised to see we have a new
offering on Monday nights: Brown and Black Yoga. If you read the fine print,
you’ll see that it’s expressly for folks who identify as a person of color, and
that white folks are asked not to attend.

This may take you aback, if you’ve never been asked to define
and restrict yourself by your race, except for the once-a-decade census form.
Those of us who came of age in the 70s and 80s, in the aftermath of Jim Crow,
largely grew up with colorblindness and desegregation as the values to strive
for. So why segregate by race now?

Consider this: we’ve been offering a Women’s Yoga class for
years. Many gyms and other centers also have special women’s hours or women’s
spaces. Culturally, we seem to understand that the needs of women are
particular, and not always met in mixed-gender spaces. It may be for religious
reasons, or it may be because women have experienced trauma associated with
men, sexual or otherwise, or it may be because the physical and physiological
needs of women are unique, or just that women would prefer to hang out
together.

In addition, yoga is a particularly vulnerable practice. We
move our bodies around in all kinds of ways. We wear snug shorts or tights and
shirts. We sweat, go upside down, and tie ourselves up in knots. Especially
when we are already asked to try new things, challenge ourselves, and leave our
comfort zones, it’s important to be in a space where you feel safe.

For the same reasons women do not always feel safe doing
yoga when men are in the room, brown and black people may not always feel safe
doing yoga when white people are in the room. In the same way misogyny
continues to rage in our society (in the media, on the streets, in the
workplace, economically, politically etc), racism
continues to plague our society through systemic racism. Distinct from
interpersonal racism, systemic racism involves the political, economic,
educational, and social structures that put white people at the top of a racial
hierarchy and keep them there.

These same systems of oppression make it all too easy for microaggressions to occur, no matter
how well-intentioned someone might be. Over time, they accumulate and can
manifest as physical illness and take an emotional toll as depression and
anxiety.

We’re offering Brown and Black Yoga because students have
requested it. They have expressed that they feel more relaxed, less guarded, more
supported, and less self-conscious when they are with each other, than when
white folks are in the room, the same way women may feel more comfortable in a
gender-segregated space. These opportunities are so few and far between that
they are treasured. They give nourishment to more happily face the rest of the
week, when we are all re-integrated into multi-racial, all-gendered spaces.

Dear Beloved Community of Iyengar Yoga Detroit,

Michele and Gwi-Seok opened Iyengar Yoga Detroit in Fall 2013, expanding from Michele’s Yoga Suite, into a larger location, with more teachers and classes. We moved into our current site 2 years ago, eager for a more permanent space on the ground floor. Since 2013, we’ve grown from 1 teacher to 5 teachers, all certified or actively engaged in the certification process, and from 3 classes a week to 13+. We host workshops, an advanced studies program, and a rare and much-needed Special Concerns class.

As we celebrate our 3rd anniversary, we are facing some changes. Michele, after much contemplation and years of dedication and sacrifice, has decided to step down from her directorship and ownership of IYD. She will continue to teach, but will no longer be our director.

We sincerely appreciate all she has done to bring Iyengar Yoga to a broad community, directing the only Iyengar Yoga center in Detroit, and one of an extremely small handful owned by a black person nationwide. We are very proud of what she has accomplished and deeply grateful.

Now, we are in the process of transitioning to a cooperatively-run structure beginning in September. We look forward to becoming one of very few yoga co-ops in the nation, and the only one we know of in Michigan. From the student’s point of view, little will change. Our schedule, fees, and policies will remain largely the same. However, organizationally, we will operate in a more community-based fashion.

We will have several types of membership for you to choose from. In additional to the general membership we have now, we will also have a $100/year tax-deductible voting membership for community folks interested in attending bi-annual meetings to help steer the course of IYD, and $200+/year tax-deductible membership for owner-managers who will run IYD and meet monthly. The additional membership levels will also be eligible for profit-sharing in surplus years.

To be truthful, IYD has yet to profit financially. We profit in many other ways by sharing the study and practice of Iyengar Yoga, but our teachers are paid far less than they deserve (sometimes less than minimum wage or no wage at all) and the organization has stayed afloat through Michele’s generosity.

Instead of the industry standard of 200 and 500-hour certifications, Iyengar Yoga certification takes about 1000 hours. Intermediate Junior teachers have more like 3000-10,000 hours of on-going training under their belts. Why do we sacrifice so much time and energy for low pay? We see Iyengar Yoga as a sacred art, a spiritual path, and healing practice, necessary for our own well-being, and of benefit to the community. We offer this art freely, and turn no one away.

In order to take IYD to the next level and establish a firm economic foundation, we ask our community to actively support us with membership, and if possible, time and energy.

We will host a fundraising party on Friday, September 9, 5:30-9pm. Details will be forthcoming, but it will consist of the usual 2nd Friday Restorative Yoga class, followed by food, an open mic, and more. Please mark your calendar and plan to attend, and bring friends. We ask for a $20-$50 donation at the door, to set us on good footing for the changes ahead. We will also be encouraging folks to get a jump on 2017 memberships, and receive 3 months of bonus membership.

Meanwhile, please ponder what Iyengar Yoga Detroit means to you, and how you might want to participate in the coming year. Do you have a gift for bookkeeping, housekeeping, or carpentry? Are you good at administration, organization, communications? Do you love social media, photography, design? the Seer within us mistakes that which is seen as unchanging, universal truths.
We can easily experience a moment of pain, discomfort, or anxiety and forget
that it is simply a fluctuation of consciousness, a temporary physical response
to our (temporary) physical environment. These are the moments that seem to
linger on forever, and even once the physical sensation has passed, often, a
piece of that experience remains lodged in our unconscious, ready to spring
back up at the drop of a hat.

<span style="font-family: "Hoefler Text"; font-size: 13.0pt;">As
B.K.S. Iyengar points out in his commentary on Patanjali’s sutras, the intellect
plays a critical role in this process, as it can easily become enmeshed in the
world of material objects. It says what is that? How did they get that and
what will it take for me to get one? Am I as smart or grounded or kind as
so-and-so? The intellect rules the small self, the ego. The great self is
in the heart. The intellect connects the head to the heart, but often this is
an unsteady connection. What is needed is not identification of the Seer with
the Seen, but transparency between the two. Once the intellect can easily
discriminate between the Seer and the Seen, then the ego dissolves, allowing
for the soul (puru<span style="font-family: "Arial Unicode MS"; font-size: 13.0pt;">ṣ<span style="font-family: "Hoefler Text"; font-size: 13.0pt;">a, the unchanging) to shine
its true light.
